Players are tradeable shares with a real price. You build a portfolio, score points based on the shares you hold, and compete head-to-head.
Selling triggers a tax on the gain, with short and long-term rates a commissioner can tune, so long holds and constant churn are treated differently on purpose. Optional ETFs hold a basket of players. NFL, NBA and MLB are all live in one portfolio. No real money — it is a skill game on virtual currency.
